There are moments that remind you what leadership and character really look like.
A friend who was visiting from out of town had been talking for the past few days about wanting to find a swan feather for her grandchildren. It was not a big thing. It was not urgent. It was simply something she wanted to do for the people she loves.
Then she spotted one floating in the lake.
Most people would have smiled, admired it, and kept walking. Not this friend.
She politely asked an employee if they had a rake she could borrow. When they brought it to her, she did not ask them to retrieve the feather. She carefully climbed onto the rocks herself and, with determination (and a little laughter), reached out until she finally pulled the beautiful white feather from the water.
Reflecting on that moment, I realized it had very little to do with the feather.
It was about how she lives her life.
She sees possibilities where others see obstacles. She finds a way forward. She follows through on what matters. She communicates and then communicates some more. She treats every person with kindness and respect. She approaches life without judgment and with a sense of humor that makes everyone around her feel comfortable. She does the work herself.
It is no surprise that she is one of the most successful real estate professionals in her community. Success is not built on one extraordinary moment. It is built on thousands of ordinary moments that reveal who you are and how you choose to show up.
Those are the moments that build trust. Those are the moments people remember. Those are the moments that define a reputation.
I thank my friend for the reminder that leadership is not reserved for closing real estate deals or brokering transactions. Sometimes, it is found on the edge of a lake with a rake in your hands, doing something meaningful for the people you love.
